Why? Because of this:

Joe Badali’s, on Front St. at University Ave., told servers it would start charging them $2 a shift to cover the costs of washing their aprons and providing notepads and cash envelopes.

The memo circulated to restaurant servers states: “It is our intention to collect an increasing amount of our costs associated with giving you as a server the opportunity to work at Joe Badali’s and receive gratuities from our guests.”

It’s not the cost of being allowed to work there. It’s the cost of running a business, and there’s no way the restaurant shouldn’t be picking up the tab for things like notepads and cash envelopes. Especially when servers only make $6.95 an hour. Sure, they get tips – but that doesn’t come from the restaurant’s pockets. Servers also usually do work before the place opens and after it closes, and they don’t get tips during those hours.

Yeah, that’s pretty fucking ridiculous. Contrary to my reputation as being a touch frugal, I’ve always been a pretty good tipper, but I do resent the notion that restaurant owners feel they can get away without paying their servers a liveable wage and just pass that cost off to the customer. Sure, it gives them motivation to do a good job, but I suppose I just take issue with the insinuation that someone should need the prospect of extra money in order to be pleasant about their work. Can’t we just be pleasant as a default?

Fuck you, Joe Badali.

Notepads? I thought they said “kneepads”!!!

Joe Badali’s doesn’t deserve my business. Also, the food is mediocre.
