Shaun Bruce, Pt. II November 10, 2006

According to the Toronto Sun (via Spacing, so Wilbur doesn’t again demand why I was reading the Sun when I wasn’t), Shaun Bruce says he can beat Stephen LeDrew.
What a marvelous thing that would be. It would make me extremely happy. Not because of Bruce’s platform specifically (too focused on students, which is to be expected since he’s running as a class project) but it would play havoc with the media’s notion of frontrunners. LeDrew was proclaimed one of the three main candidates as soon as he announced he was running, which was late in the game. But why? He jumped in at the last minute, and a lot of people thought the whole thing was a joke at first. His popularity is now at 2%, so the race is now really considered to be between Pitfield and Miller. But for along time it was a top 3. Maybe if Bruce kicks LeDrew’s ass, the next time around things will go a little more fairly for everyone – rather than having candidates like LeDrew taken very seriously simply because of notoriety and having most candidates immediately relegated to the back ground and shut out of debates. What kind of democracy is it when those deemed worthy are chosen by a select few long before anyone goes to vote?
